Scrapbook Glossary J thru M
J
JOURNALING - In scrapbooking it refers to writing down all the important information -- the "story" -- regarding the photos, such as who is in the pictures, when they was taken, etc. If handwriting you should use a pen that is fade and waterproof. Some people prefer to do their journaling on the computer. Either way, it is one of the most important elements of your pages, so be sure to include it!

L
LAMINATION - Describes a thin, translucent plastic sheet bonded onto paper; not a good method for preserving your scrapbook pages.
LAYOUT - Refers to how all the design elements (pictures, tags, journaling blocks, etc.) are applied to the page. There are an infinite number of layouts.
LIGHTFAST (fade resistant) - means it will resist fading when exposed to light or heat.
LIGNIN - a natural substance found in plants and tree. In paper that has not had it removed, the lignin will break down into acid and thus degrade the paper.
LIGNIN-FREE - designates that the lignin has been removed.
M
MAGNETIC ALBUM - Magnetic albums are not really "magnetic," but have some sort of tacky adhesive on the pages to which you place your photos. Then there is a plastic sheet that overlays it. These albums are very harmful to your photos and they should be removed ASAP. I have heard of some people using a piece of dental floss and gently sliding it between the page and picture to remove the pictures from the pages, although I have not tried it.
MATTING - refers to placing a picture or other item on a larger piece of paper or cardstock, creating a "frame" around it.
MEMORABILIA - refers to any item that is saved to commemorate an event or to help recall the memory; can be ticket stubs, maps, keys, baby teeth, etc. (Yes, I saved my son's baby teeth! LOL!)
MEMORY ALBUM (keepsake album) - another name for a scrapbook.
MOUNT - To attach a picture or item to your page or other piece of paper or cardstock or item.
MOUNTING SQUARES - Small square pieces of double-sided adhesive used to affix pictures or other items to your scrapbook pages.
