Heritage Scrapbooks
Legacy Bits and Baubles From Your Family Tree
Before you begin your heritage scrapbooks you will need to gather all the photographs that you have available. This will aid you while you work so you won't realize, too late, that you have a photo that should have been included on any particular layout. You may wish to visit with other family members to see if you can scan and print any photos you do not already have.
When you visit other members of your family, especially the older ones, take along a tape recorder and ask if they mind recording their answers for you. You can transfer the entire recording to a CD and tuck it in with your pages (be sure to keep your original recording somewhere safe). However, always remember to take along a notepad and pen to manually record all those things you may wish to include while journaling. Better yet, have your elder family members write down some of their memories and include them as well.
You may also wish to include some official family documents, such as:
- Birth Certificates
- Marriage Licenses
- Divorce Decrees
- Death Certificates
- Military Discharges
While working on your family scrapbook, you are designing a visual memory book of your lineage. You will be recording and capturing the notable historical events of your ancestors within your scrapbooking pages. In it you will illustrate the lives of those you love even if you never met them, with token memorabilia of the day. You will want to design each page in such a way as to compliment itself as well as the others for presentation or display.
Other family items you may wish to include may be:
- Awards
- Ticket Stubs
- Museum Passes
- Airplane Tickets
- Announcements
- Drawings or Doodles
- Newspaper Clippings
- Handwritten Anything
